A comeback like never before. Tata Motors has officially brought back one of its most iconic cars: the Tata Sierra. The SUV first came out in 1991 and stayed on Indian roads till 2003 before slowly disappearing. For years, fans kept hoping it would make a comeback, and Tata has finally done it with a completely reimagined version.

But the relaunch wasn’t the only big moment. Tata Motors also surprised everyone by showing something Indian automakers had never tried before: a full-scale car-to-car head-on collision test. Usually, when we hear about crash tests, they involve hitting a fixed wall or barrier. But in real life, most crashes involve two moving vehicles. So, Tata decided to test exactly that.

At the launch event, the company played a short video showing the entire sequence. Two new-gen Sierras rolled out from opposite sides and rammed into each other head-on. It was a controlled test but the impact looked intense.

What stood out was how the SUVs held up. Tata pointed out that the A-pillars of both cars stayed strong, the roof didn’t collapse and the cabin space remained intact. Even after such a strong collision, the doors could still be opened.

This was important for Tata because they wanted to show how their cars perform in situations closer to real accidents. Wall impacts don’t always capture the force and angle of two moving vehicles hitting each other. Tata said they wanted to present the raw, unfiltered behaviour of the Sierra without CGI or staged drama.

The final word on safety will come only after the SUV undergoes official Bharat NCAP testing. Those are the ratings that matter for buyers as Bharat NCAP checks everything such as adult and child occupant protection, body shell stability, braking performance, ESC capability and even post-crash safety. Only once those scores are out will we know exactly how the new Sierra ranks on paper.

Alongside the safety demonstration, the Sierra itself received a lot of attention for its updated design, modern features and the nostalgia factor it carries. An old favourite returning with a stronger identity definitely hits different.

At the event, Tata Motors finally revealed what people were waiting for: the price. The new-generation Tata Sierra starts at Rs 11.49 lakh (ex-showroom) for the base Smart+ Persona. Bookings open December 16, 2025 and deliveries will begin from January 15, 2026.
