Prince William stepped up in a major way after King Charles III was diagnosed with cancer in 2024. But now that his health has improved, the 77-year-old monarch is ready to reclaim his position at the helm of the royal family.
“William is incredibly relieved that his father’s health is improving,” a source tells Examiner. “But what isn’t so great is that Charles has turned around and started snatching back a lot of the authority he’d begun handing over this past year.”
As Examiner has previously reported, a cancer-stricken Charles unloaded some of his responsibilities to William, 43, and wife Princess Kate while he sought treatment.

“There was never any discussion about this being temporary. It was framed as the first real steps toward William eventually taking the throne,” explains the source. “He took his father at his word and assumed 2026 would be a breakthrough year where he could finally put his stamp on things.”
Instead, “William feels like the rug has been pulled out from under him,” the source continues. “He was asked to shoulder serious responsibility. He stepped up and proved himself capable, only to have it quietly taken away.”

The future king is “struggling to hide his frustration” about it too, adds the source.
“Charles wants to remind everyone that he’s still the boss while he’s alive and well and William understands that,” the source tells Examiner. “But he sees no reason for Charles to run himself ragged trying to micromanage everything. From William’s point of view, it feels like a slap in the face.”
