Dhanush‘s latest film Kara has emerged as a major disappointment at the Kara box office, posting weak collections despite releasing on April 30, 2026. The Tamil heist thriller, which marked the actor’s 54th lead role, opened to mixed word-of-mouth and very low advances, resulting in ordinary weekend numbers and crashing weekday collections.

The Kara box office performance has been underwhelming, managing to collect only around ₹40 Cr gross worldwide in its first 6 days. With the second weekend also not expected to show much growth as per current trends, the numbers indicate a disastrous run ahead.

Kara is a Tamil-language heist action thriller directed by Vignesh Raja, set in the early 1990s. The film stars Dhanush in the titular role alongside Mamitha Baiju, K. S. Ravikumar, Jayaram, and Suraj Venjaramoodu. The story follows a reformed thief who is forced back into crime after his family’s ancestral land is seized by a bank.

Disappointing Follow-up for Director Vignesh Raja

The poor Kara box office performance comes as a surprise given director Vignesh Raja‘s impressive debut with Por Thozhil (2023), which earned ₹50 Cr and received positive reviews from critics. The crime thriller established Raja as a promising filmmaker, making Kara‘s failure even more unexpected for the industry.

Budget Recovery Looks Bleak

With a reported production budget of over ₹100 Cr, Kara is heading towards one of the bigger disasters in recent times. The film’s theatrical share may not even recover one-third of its budget, joining the list of high-budget disasters similar to how Kamal Haasan’s Indian 2 ended its run with disastrous numbers in 2024.

As the current pace suggests, this weekend itself could end up being close to Kara‘s final run at the box office, with the theatrical release unlikely to extend beyond another week in most territories.
