I had hoped this marriage was forever

Kris Humphries and Kim Kardashian were an “it” couple while they were together. Humphries was a blossoming basketball player for the Brooklyn Nets while Kardashian was one of the stars of the reality show “Keeping Up with the Kardashians.” Together, they were a high-profile pair who dominated entertainment headlines.

However, their much-ballyhooed love affair came to a crashing end only 72 days after they said “I do’s” on August 20, 2011, at a private residential estate in Montecito, California, with Kim filing for divorce on October 31, 2011, in a Los Angeles Superior Court.

“I hope everyone understands this was not an easy decision,”said Kardashian in a statement released via her show’s network E!. “I had hoped this marriage was forever, but sometimes things don’t work out as planned.”

A whirlwind romance that ended abruptly

Kris and Kim met in October 2010, after she saw him at a Nets game and thought he was cute. Their common friend and Humphries’ Nets teammate, Jordan Farmar, introduced them, and they started dating. Seven months later, they got engaged, and three months after the engagement, Kim’s “Fairytale Wedding” was well documented in a two-part special on her TV show.

In her divorce filing, Kardashian cited irreconcilable differences. While no specific reason was given, there were early signs that they were too different. For instance, they argued several times on the show after Kim said she did not want to use the surname Humphries and wanted to keep Kardashian for branding purposes. There were also reports that she didn’t like how the NBA big man partied without her during the league’s lockout.

“I love my wife and am devastated to learn she filed for divorce,” he said in a statement obtained by People magazine. “I’m committed to this marriage and everything this covenant represents, and I’m willing to do whatever it takes to make it work.”

Kris wanted an annulment, not a divorce

A month after that statement, Kris wanted to move on, too. However, he did not want a divorce; he wanted their marriage to be dissolved on the basis of fraud. In Humphries’ annulment papers, he claimed he was duped into entering the relationship and marriage for the Kardashians’ flourishing TV program and sought $7 million as his share of income from the reality show.

However, on the eve of the annulment trial, Humphries dropped his petition and agreed to a settlement in which he did not receive any payment, while agreeing to pay his own attorney’s fees. Kris’ change of heart made it easy for the judge to finally dissolve their marriage in June 2013, concluding a long legal battle that lasted 543 days, or seven-and-a-half times longer than the marriage lasted. Curiously, Kim gave birth to her first child with Kanye West 11 days after the divorce was finalized on June 4, 2013.

Meanwhile, after averaging career highs of 13.8 points and 11.0 rebounds per game in 62 games, all starts, for the Nets during the 2011-12 NBA season, Humphries’ performance plummeted in 2012-13. He played five more seasons in the association, but he never got back to that double-double machine status again.
