Will PM Narendra Modi opt for bulletproof glass enclosure on Independence Day?

In the wake of immense security threat, officials are insisting for a bullet-resistant glass enclosure for Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his Independence Day speech, a report said on Thursday.

According to a report published in Hindustan Times, security officials are seeking bulletproof enclosure as PM Modi continues to face threats from many extremists and terror organisations.

The security officials don’t want a repeat of last year’s episode, when breaking from the past tradition, the PM had delivered his Independence Day speech from the ramparts of the Red Fort minus the usual bulletproof glass enclosure.

As the PM had asked for removal of the bulletproof glass last year, more security had to be put in place to ensure foolproof security for Modi.

The practice of using the bullet-proof glass enclosure began around 1985-86.

After Indira Gandhi’s assassination, Modi became the first prime minister to deliver his Independence Day speech from the Red Fort without bulletproof glass enclosure.

Meanwhile, ahead of the 69th Independence Day, security has been tightened across Punjab, especially in border districts in the wake of Gurdaspur terror attack last month, besides Haryana and Chandigarh.
