Rahul Gandhi’s elevation as Congress chief likely to be delayed

Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi is not likely to elevated as party president any time soon.

Media reports on Monday said that the Congress Working Committee (CWC), the party’s highest decision-making body, is not in favour of Rahul taking charge as the party president in near future.

Sources close to party claimed that a section of senior Congress leaders feel that Rahul’s elevation just before Bihar Assembly elections wouldn’t augur well for the party.

Sources also say that the Congress top leadership prefers Sonia to continue at the helm, and don’t want Rahul to take over as the president as the latter is seen as an uncompromising leader.

The CWC is meeting today to discuss organisational issues and present political situation.

Rahul, who was elevated as Congress vice-president in January 2013, was tipped to take over as party president from his mother Sonia Gandhi whose tenure ends in December this year.

The meeting is being held against the backdrop of the ongoing process of organisational elections which will culminate with the election of president.

There had been suggestions from within the party for elevation of party vice president Rahul to the top post while some leaders had suggested that Sonia Gandhi should continue to be the president.

The Congress is making efforts towards its revival after its debacle in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections and defeat in subsequent assembly polls with Rahul Gandhi aggressively taking on the Narendra Modi government over the past few months.

The meeting comes weeks ahead of crucial assembly elections in Bihar, where the Congress is part of alliance that includes Janata Dal-United and Rashtriya Janata Dal.

The CWC is also expected to take stock of the current political situation, including the Congress stand of boycotting Parliament over Lalitgate and Vyapam issues, its success in forcing the Modi government to drop the land ordinance.
