Dr Harsh Vardhan to be Delhi BJP’s face again?

Dr Harsh Vardhan

Ahead of crucial Delhi Assembly Elections, Dr Harsh Vardhan is likely to be Bhrataiya Janata Party’s chief ministerial candidate once again.

One of the biggest surprises of the Cabinet expansion and reshuffle was the replacement of Dr Harsh Vardhan by Jagat Prakash Nadda at the Health Ministry. But reports suggest that the BJP is planning to send the current Minister for Science and Technology and Earth Sciences back to state politics in the absence of a credible face in Delhi ahead of important polls.

The clean image of Dr Harsh Vardhan, who was the BJP’s chief ministerial candidate during last Assembly polls, had led the Bharatiya Janata Party to emerge as the single largest party.

According to reports, the minister has been given the low-profile ministry so that he gets more spare time for Delhi and be ready for bigger responsibilities.

Recent opinion polls have suggested that the BJP will get absolute majority in Delhi Assembly polls, riding on the ‘Modi wave’, but the party needs a credible face to ensure its win.

As per an opinion poll, Aam Aadmi Party’s Arvind Kejriwal is the most suitable candidate for the position of Chief Minister with 39 percent of the respondents preferring him. BJP’s Harsh Vardhan is a close second with 38 percent while Sheila Dikshit has got support of 7 percent respondents followed by Jagdish Mukhi who was preferred by 5 percent.

The half-way mark in the 70-member Delhi Assembly is 36.
