Delhi LG Najeeb Jung annuls appointment of Swati Maliwal as DCW chief

The tussle between Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung escalated on Wednesday after the latter annulled the appointment of Swati Maliwal, wife of AAP leader Naveen Jaihind, as Delhi Commission of Women (DCW) chief.

Jung said that his required approval was not taken before the appointment of Maliwal as new DCW chairperson and termed the Delhi CM’s decision as null and void.

“He (LG) has written a letter to the government calling the appointment ultra vires,” an official at Jung’s office told.

Jung said that his required approval was not taken before the appointment of Maliwal as new DCW chairperson and termed the Delhi CM’s decision as null and void.

“He (LG) has written a letter to the government calling the appointment ultra vires,” an official at Jung’s office told IANS.

He has also written a letter to Delhi Chief Minister and Chief Secretary in this concern.

Despite opposition, 30-year-old Maliwal was appointed as the DCW chief on July 20 replacing Barkha Singh.

She was advisor (grievances) to Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal before she replaced Barkha Shukla and has been associated with the AAP chief since India Against Corruption (IAC) days.

The opposition was aggressive over Maliwal’s selection terming it as “nepotism” while the AAP maintained that her selection was done purely on “merit”.

Despite opposition by both Bharatiya Janata Party and Congress over appointment of Maliwal as DCW chief, the party defended Kejriwal’s decision.

Kejriwal also denied rumours of being related to her and took to Twitter to deny the allegations.
