In a bid to draw the attention of Narendra Modi government towards price rise, the Congress in Gorakhpur has launched a campaign wherein it is selling onions for Rs 5 per kg. The subsidised onion even has a name: Rahul Gandhi pyaaz.
With posters marketing the onion under the tagline, ‘Aapka dhyan kidhar hai, Rahul Gandhi pyaaz idhar hai. Rahul pyaaz 5 rupee kilo, Modi pyaaz 40 rupee kilo kyon’, Congress workers Saturday set up stalls at the Golghar market and claimed to have sold 500 kg of it to nearly 100 people.
During the Lok Sabha elections last year, the Gorakhpur unit had introduced ‘Rahul milk’, which was sold to people free of cost. It also ran a ‘Rahul herbal tea’ campaign after the polls were over. Congress district general secretary Anwar Hussain, the brain behind the campaign, said, “The Modi government has benefited only rich businessmen, not the poor and middle-class sections.”
Hussain said the party purchased onions for Saturday’s campaign from the wholesale market at the rate of Rs 33 per kg. “In four days, we will sell 1,500 kg of ‘Rahul Gandhi pyaaz’ in Khorabar area,” he added.
