In releases up to SAP NetWeaver 7.3, SAP provided the Alert Framework mechanism. With enhancement package 1 for SAP NetWeaver 7.3 and newer releases, SAP provides additionally a new component-based message alerting mechanism. During the installation of SAP NetWeaver release that supports both alerting mechanisms, or during an upgrade to such a release, you should choose which of these alerting mechanisms you want to use in your system.
In case there is an issue with the processing of a message in a Process Integration (PI) system, the system sets the corresponding error status for this message. Within the PI message processing runtime, this can be referred to as an error event. When an Alert Engine receives information from the PI message processing runtime about a message with an error status, it considers this information to be an alert event and starts processing it.
Alert rules are objects in Integration Directory. An alert rule defines conditions at which an alert should be created.
Users can create and administrate alert rules in SAP NetWeaver Administrator or in Integration Directory.
An Alert Engine is available on AS ABAP and AS Java systems that support component-based message alerting. The engine receives alert events, compares them to the alert rules available on this engine, and generates alerts.
An alert generated by the Alert Engine is a set of data. It contains the data from the matched alert event, the ID of the matched alert rule, time stamp, and other details.
Alert consumers retrieve the alerts intended for them from the corresponding local store of an Alert Engine. The consumers can use the information contained in the alert to notify administrators and other users, so that the latter can review the error and fix it.
