6 things to know about reggae legend Bob Marley on his birth anniversary

Regarded as one of the most well known voices in the world of music, reggae legend Bob Marley’s face is a common site on dorm room posters to t-shirts. He started out rather successfully in a band called The Wailers, but the group disbanded in 1974, after which Marley pursued a solo career. We remember the popular singer, songwriter, musician and guitarist on what would have been his 71st birthday by taking a look at some unknown facts about him.

1.Bob Marley’s full name is Robert Nesta Marley. However, he had originally been names Nesta Robert Marley. His name had been switched upon the suggestion of a Jamaican immigration officer, who felt that Nesta sounded like a girl’s name.

2.The singer lived in Delaware when he was 21, and had a flurry of jobs. He worked the night shift at Chrysler’s plant, worked as a lab assistant for DuPont (an American chemical company) and even drove a forklift in a factory.

3. Though he stayed married to his spouse, Rita Marley till his death, he fathered at least twenty children from different women.

4. Not just singing and songwriting, Bob played a mean game of football as he was a professional level football player.

5. He died when he was just 36, due to brain, liver, stomach and lungs cancer.

6.His last words to his son, Ziggy Marley were, “Money can’t buy life.”
